Techniques for Green Screen Movie Making in Miniature Using an iPad

Traditional Green Screen MovieMaking can be overwhelming involving setup, equipment and even software. Thanks to the iPad, we can bring this editing process down to a manageable size for use in the classroom. The smaller scale also provides for quick and easy setup/breakdown of equipment and supplies when you have multiple classes or limited space in your classroom.

THE EQUIPMENT
Green Screen Options Tri-fold Board Poster Board Contact Paper Dry Erase Board Felt / Material Paint		Tips and Tricks Use large tri-fold Science project boards and cut them in half You can purchase mini tri-fold boards. There are green Science project boards if you want to purchase one already colored. Turn your tri-fold board backwards to allow students to get in on the sides and over the top when using their characters. Staples and Amazon has Green Contact Paper to cover the boards You can also paint your board using a bright green paint or purchase the true chrome key green paint and use it for walls, boards, etc. Using contact paper allows you to wipe off dirt. Covering items with paper can cause issue for durability as paper tears.
Lighting Mini Tripod lights Flashlights Clip Lights Overhead Lighting		Tips and Tricks Dollar stores have several types of reading lights that can be used for lighting. Many of these lights can be clipped on to the top of the presentation area. Flashlights with swivel heads and flat bases also assist for focus lighting. Light the background first and then use alternate lighting for your characters if needed.
Chroma Keying Accessories Straws/sticks Hand Gloves Full Length Arm Gloves Fabric Shirts Body Suit		Tips and Tricks Straws can be found in many colors to match the background: Starbucks - Green Zaxby's - Blue Sonic - Red Dollar stores have green gloves in the beauty section (just don't use them for the "moisturizing" feature). Costume shops have full length arm gloves in various colors. Fabric can be purchased at most fabric stores including Walmart (fabric can be used to cover benches, chairs, bulletin boards or anything that you want to have disappear). T-shirts in the same color as the background will allow for the "Floating head" effect (as well as draping the fabric over the person). Body suits allow the entire person to disappear if needed for the "Just right' shot when using green screen on a larger scale.
Characters Hand-drawn Clip-art Pictures of students cut out Scrapbooking items Stickers Magazine pictures Small hand or finger puppets		Tips and Tricks Call the characters 2D Characters if students do not like the words paper dolls, puppets, etc. When your students draw their own characters, pay attention to the size as students tend to go bigger than is usable within the tabletop set. Put popsicle sticks or small sticks on the back of reusable characters. This allows your characters to be sturdy and if using tape to attach the characters to stick/straw, this will not tear the paper when removed. Attach the characters to the straws/sticks with velcro to preserve 2-D Characters and also allow the characters to be controlled from different angles. Velcro can be purchased at dollar stores! Go to dollar stores and purchase scrapbooking characters that are already pre-made to put into sets for quick use. Take pictures of your students (or other school faculty/staff) in different poses, print on card stock and cut them out. Do not laminate characters - causes lighting issues. Use magazines for images - caution here due to the shiny surface. Use small hand puppets or finger puppets that fit within the confines of the stage or set.
Background & Foreground Images and Movies	~Discovery Education - Subscription Based Service ~Search Creative Commons Image Search ~Corbis Images ~MorgueFile ~Everystockphoto ~Pixaby ~Flickr Commons	Tips and Tricks Allow students to draw and scan their own images. Use image apps to create backgrounds. Use Google Apps to create collaborative drawings through Google Presentation and/or Draw. Don't forget about the Paint and Drawing programs that come on Desktop computers. Check with your district to see if you have a subscription to Discovery Education where you can search for "editable" content to use within your projects. Use "Royalty Free" image or video sites. Remember to teach students, through modeling, how to cite your sources!! Many of these sites provide the citation for you in various formats.
Equipment / Stands iPad Stand iPod Stand Tripod Stand Mics		Tips and Tricks Make sure that the connecting device on the tripod is stable and sturdy. Table top stands work well on desks and small areas - can also use book stands from Media Centers. You can find different types of stands in various dollar stores and department stores. Contact your local high school and have the carpentry or metal shop classes make some tabletop stands for your classroom as a collaborative project. The official iPod earbuds with Mic allow you to control different apps and work very well for recording - however, limits the distance away from the stage/set due to the cord.
